Cologne Christmas Markets Trip 2011

After a long night on the coach, we arrived safely in Cologne at midday.

We've enjoyed a full day of exploring the Christmas markets near the famous Kölner Dom and also the floating market on the Rhine.

In the afternoon, we visited the Sports museum where some of us put our physical skills to the test.

After such an active day, we were ready for dinner in the hostel and hopefully a good nights sleep....

Up early Friday morning, bags packed and ready for Frühstück.

This was followed by a lovely walk over the famous "Padlock bridge". Couples display their love for one another by hanging engraved padlocks from the railings.

After our refreshing walk, it was time for one of the trip's highlights, the Lindt Schokoladen Museum. We had up-close and personal access to the secrets of the chocolate world and we were lucky enough to receive some delicious chocolate treats.

How would we possibly choose what to take home from the gift shop?

After we had finally left the chocolate shop, it was time to explore the remaining Christmas markets. Armed with their German conversational prompt sheets and Mrs Barnes' Christmas quiz, students went off into the markets in search of the answers. Who will be the winner of the quiz?

Köln Christmas Market Trip

German trip to Cologne report, 8th-11th December 2010

On a very cold night back in December we boarded our coach with excitement. After Mrs Barnes and Mr Humphrey had counted our passports for the 5th time and Mr Barnes and Mrs Brown sorted out the on-board entertainment, we finally set off on our 11 hour journey to Cologne. During the journey we watched DVD’s and had a contest to see whose parents had packed the biggest picnic for them.

We arrived in Cologne nice and early on Thursday morning. Our first sight was the famous Cologne cathedral. Luckily we did not have to climb to the top as there were over 500 steps.  After a brief stop at the cathedral we had a stroll around the Christmas markets. There were 7 different markets to choose from and during our stay we visited the traditional market, the medieval market and the floating market. At the markets we could choose from lots of traditional handmade gifts and toys as well as tempting German cuisine such as sausages, pretzels and noodles. With all that delicious food around we needed something to help to burn off the calories and luckily, our next stop was at the Sports museum. We were able to find out lots of interesting sports facts as well as flex our muscles on some of the equipment.

Anya, Reuben and Seth demonstrate their mighty strength whilst Luke shows us his hidden ballet talents.

We had quite a few talented sportsmen and women amongst us who were keen to dazzle us with their weight-lifting and long-jump skills.

Bill limbers up for the long-jump whilst Jasmin and Mr Humphrey take a well-earned rest. Time to go to the hostel for dinner!

One of the highlights of the trip was the chocolate museum where we watched the clever people of Lindt making lots of chocolate goodies. We even got to sample some of the freshly made chocolate. After the tour we had the tough decision of which delicious chocolate treats to buy in the gift shop. Would any of them last on the journey home?

We packed a lot into the trip with visits to the market, chocolate museum and sports museum. We learned about the German culture at Christmas time and discovered how people of Cologne make romantic gestures by using padlocks (all useful information for the Year 8 German projects). We returned to school on Saturday morning, very tired but happy.

The trip was a great success and we hope to see you on it next time.

To find out how you can be part of this amazing experience, please see Mrs Barnes in 3E14.

French trip 2010

Back in July we set off for a whirlwind 24 hour trip to France. After having a lovely snooze on the coach journey, we arrived in the very pretty French town, Le Touquet where we were able to sample amazing culinary delights such as croissants, pain au chocolat and fromage.

Once we had stocked up on tasty treats and French souveniers, we boarded the coach for Parc Bagatelle http://www.parcbagatelle.com/

At the theme park we tried out as many rides as possible and because the French children were still at school, we practically had the run of the park. We had fun checking out our reflections in the crazy hall of mirrors.

After the theme park, it was time to shop, shop, shop at the hypermarché. We stocked up on French bargains and tested out our fantastic French phrases before boarding the coach for Bristol.

We packed a lot into our 24 heures en France and found it to be an amazing way to experience French culture à l'extérieur de la classe.
